The news media is at the heart of democratic political systems. The media feeds into public debate, helps citizens assess measures in the public sphere and make decisions at election time. With multiple news channels, editorial viewpoints and subjects covered, the French public has at its disposal a diverse range of news sources. In a world in which digital technology has greatly expanded the sources of publicly-available information, the 2018 edition of the DEPS Cultural Practices was expanded to include issues such as news monitoring, channels and themes. In 2019 and 2020 it was also extended to cover the French overseas territories of Guadeloupe, French Guiana, La Réunion, Martinique and Mayotte. Whilst the use of social media and online press sources has grown over the last two years, television remains the most popular media source.
