Routes of a movement of religious reform. The Jacobeia in Portugal and its empire (17th-18th centuries)

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2025. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Jacobeia was a religious reform movement that emerged in Portugal at the end of the 17th century, and grew rapidly during the 18th century. This article analyses the history of Jacobeia by taking as a starting point the trajectory of its founder and the formation of the networks of followers that supported its expansion. Following a presentation of the general characteristics of the movement and the reform action proposed by the Jacobeans, we describe and analyse two cases: a Jacobean ecclesiastic in Mozambique, and a secular woman who reportedly adhered to Jacobean ideas in Brazil. We highlight the pathways and the ramifications of a movement which spread throughout the Portuguese empire.
