Theocracy and Client Kings: Antiochus I of Commagene and Herod the Great
Type de matériel :

The goal of this paper is to draw a parallel between the propagandas of two client kings who lived nearly at the same time in the Roman Near-East : Antiochos I Theos, king of Commagene (69-36 BC) and Herod the Great (40-4 BC). Both of them were ethnic kings, both used an intense theocratic propaganda based on huge building programs. Despite the ideological opposition between Jewish monotheism and syncretic polytheism, we can point out many similarities between Herodian and Commagenian policies.
