The looks and glances borne by the individual throughout life have a decisive effect on the burgeoning of his or her psychic development. We adopted the hypothesis that taking photos of young mothers busy looking after their babies could sustain them in confirming and asserting their sense of existence, which so often proves to be tenuous. It is the session where these shots are viewed by the parties concerned that is so rich in virtue, with the young woman discovering herself as woman and mother and for the first time perceiving certain of her child’s attitudes and reactions, especially pleasure. Thus, the photo, in allowing for what the author calls the “creative look ,” could turn out to be an instrument for narcissistic reinforcement and access to a “loop of pleasure ” dimension shared by two.
