This leads on to seeking to identify the unconscious mainsprings of adherence to the sect while also devoting sufficient attention to the destructiveness at work within such groups. This adherence seems to us to represent an attempt to break free from the stranglehold of the family, replacing it with another object, and thus finding the same symbiotic link. Being the follower of a sect reflects a powerful longing to belong to a group in its most symbiotic aspect.
