Each adoption project reveals, besides the explicit desire for having a child, specific necessities of each spouse and reflections of their psychic history, which will have repercussions on the relationship to be established with the child. In the present article the authors approach the issue of adoption discussing the establishment of the feeling of affiliation, the specificity of the bond of adoption and the fantasies developed within the family with the arrival of the adopted child. The authors also present and discuss some data about the adoption process in Brazil, more specifically in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
