The intimate is by nature an unstable and fleeting category. For that reason, historical work on it can only go so far. Based on the correspondences of a family in the 19th century, this paper attempts to shed light on the veiling and unveiling that shapes intimate expression in the relationship with the other. The epistolary practice creates a space particularly conducive to experiencing ego sociality.
