The aim of this article is to examine the forms and challenges of Brazil’s involvement in international postal communications in the 19th century. Brazil’s entry into the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1877 crowned an active policy of participation in international traffic, while at the same time marking its attraction for a new framework for negotiating trade conditions. An assembly of countries on an equal footing, the UPU appeared as an alternative to the system of bilateral treaties favoring the colonial powers of the North. The conditions and geopolitical implications of this first accession by a South American country cannot be underestimated.

L’objectif de cet article est de saisir les formes et enjeux de l’insertion du Brésil dans les communications postxales internationales au xixe siècle. L’entrée du Brésil dans l’Union postale universelle (UPU) en 1877 couronne une politique active de participation aux trafics internationaux, tout en marquant l’attrait pour un nouveau cadre de négociation des conditions des échanges. Assemblée de pays mis sur un pied d’égalité, l’UPU apparaît comme une alternative au système de traités bilatéraux favorisant les puissances coloniales du Nord. Les conditions et implications géopolitiques de cette première adhésion d’un pays d’Amérique du Sud ne sauraient être minorées.
