From Artificial Intelligence to Virtual Personhood: The Emergence of a Legal Entity

32
Up to now, it has been assumed that machines were not able to act by themselves but they have bridged the gap and become autonomous in the new virtual world. Must we change our paradigms and allow machines to embody us in a sustainable way and in a legal framework ruling virtual communities? These questions give us the opportunity to exhume debates that have been going on since the early days of artificial intelligence. What is the relationship between natural and artificial persons? How does law come to grips with the cyberworld? And if virtual agents can act on our behalf, what will be their real legal capacity? What will the fiction of the virtual person be used for?
