The lawmakers and various administrations have created along the years numerous mechanisms aiming to honour a person, alive or dead. The texts have carefully stated the necessary conditions, and later the case-law has contributed to reinforcing this framework. The article presents the legal conditions required whether from the persons who bestow the honours or from those who receive them and, more generally, it discusses the desired functions of these various mechanisms.
