The constitution of a men’s spanking club in the late 1980s in France offers an opportunity to analyse the definition of the fantasy of a minority, and to explore the logic of a process of eroticization. The club began by defining a fetishism of spanking that constituted it as an autonomous erotic practice, integrating pain and humiliation, and blurring the distinction between coercion and consent to the point of indiscernibility. Through the use of scenarios, this fantasy opens up possibilities of identification and establishes a relationship to time based on the anticipation of spanking, which is simultaneously feared and desired. The pornographic narratives published in the association’s magazine also offer details on the historical conditions around this fantasy. The association was created when problematizations of violence and childhood change, with widespread condemnation of corporal punishment as well as denunciation of disciplinary institutions and of pedophilia. The fantasy of spanking is based on a specific temporalization: it is a return to childhood as seen through the lens of adult desires, a historically situated afterwardness which replays, in a minor mode, masculine experiences that are in the process of being reclassified as illegitimate or on the way to disappearing.
