Since their domestication, dogs have been involved in many human activities, most of which pertain to the field of work. If dogs have taken their place in our human societies on a long-term basis, it is because of their effectiveness in carrying out tasks that we entrusted them with, including responding to the needs of humans made vulnerable by disability, disease and ageing. How do dogs take part in care work? Can they be considered workers? Can the kennel be seen as a school? This article highlights the centrality of work in the educational system of guide dogs for blind people. On the animal’s part, to take care means to work. To educate also means to engage with their interest and enjoyment in working with humans.
