Why remain located in small cities? The case of agrifood firms in Occitanie (France)

This article examines the advantages and disadvantages of agrifood firms remaining based in small cities. After reviewing the literature on the determinants of firms’ location in large cities and rural areas, we argue that small cities combine the advantages of large cities and rural areas. On the basis of semi-structured interviews, we study the case of ten agrifood firms located in the southwest of France. This study confirms the specificity of small cities and highlights the crucial role of policies aimed at supporting local businesses as a differentiating factor for small cities.
