Kierkegaard penseur romantique n’opposant aux systèmes philosophiques que sa subjectivité solitaire : tel est le reproche fréquent que semble renforcer la place dans son œuvre du rapport individuel à Dieu. Or c’est justement par sa pensée religieuse que Kierkegaard échappe au subjectivisme, appliquant au domaine de l’émotion individuelle des déterminations conceptuelles qu’il n’appartient pas au sujet de régir. La révélation que prétend avoir reçue un contemporain de Kierkegaard, le pasteur Adler, est l’occasion pour le penseur danois d’accentuer encore la séparation entre la vérité chrétienne et l’intériorité.

However it is precisely by his religious thought that Kierkegaard escapes subjectivism, applying to the field of individual emotion conceptual determinations which the subject is not in a position to govern. The revelation which a contemporary of Kierkegaard, Pastor Adler, claims to have received is the occasion for the Danish thinker to accentuate the gap between the truth of Christianity and the field of interiority.
