Cet article examine les règles d’écriture et de composition de l’histoire naturelle selon Robert Boyle, afin de montrer comment les principes baconiens ont été repris et révisés dans la seconde moitié du xviie siècle. On s’intéresse dans un premier temps à l’écriture des expériences et observations, dont la description constitue la matière principale de l’histoire naturelle. La composition des ouvrages d’histoire naturelle est ensuite examinée dans ses dimensions méthodologique, heuristique et programmatique. Enfin, l’article souligne l’exigence de collaboration en histoire naturelle et s’interroge sur la manière dont celle-ci se manifeste dans l’écriture et la présentation des textes.

This article examines the rules for writing and presenting natural history according to Robert Boyle, with a view to showing how Bacon’s principles were both followed and revised in the late seventeenth century. The article first focuses on the way of writing experiments and observations, the description of which constitutes the main material of a natural history. The composition of books of natural history is then examined in its methodological, heuristic, and programmatic dimensions. Finally, the article inquires into the principle of collaboration in natural history and the way it is rendered in the writing and presentation of the texts here studied.
