Reinforced by law, French metropolitan areas (or métropoles) have generated high expectations in terms of development. Governed by an executive council made up of municipal representatives, these métropoles are faced with tensions deriving from their structure. This article shows how the need to avoid conflict with the municipal echelon constrains the communication policies of the métropole. Analysis of editorials published in institutional inter-municipal newspapers shows a gradual de-politicization of French metropolitan entities as they grow in power. We highlight the evolution towards a strategy of communicational and political “euphemization” of metropolitan areas.
