Il est possible de repérer dans le Commentaire de l’évangile de saint Jean par saint Thomas d’Aquin des éléments de la doctrine trinitaire, originaux même au sein de l’œuvre du théologien dominicain. En particulier, des « axiomes » gouvernant l’activité des personnes divines dans l’économie du salut sont explicités par l’Aquinate dans le Commentaire. Ces axiomes portent sur la manifestation du principe de la procession par la personne qui en procède, et sur l’assimilation qu’opère l’Esprit Saint à son principe. Ainsi apparaît chez Thomas une théologie du « retour vers le Père », qui interprète l’économie à la lumière des processions trinitaires.

It is possible to uncover in the Thomas Aquinas’ Commentary on the Gospel of Saint John elements of the trinitarian doctrine, original even within the dominican theologian’s body of work. In particular, the axioms governing the activity of the divine persons in the economy of salvation are explicited by the Aquinate in the Commentary. The axioms have a bearing on the manifestation of the principle of the procession of the person who procedes from it, and on the assimilation that the Holy Spirit operates on its principle. Thus appears in Thomas a theology of a « return to the Father » that interprets the economy in light of the trinitarian processions.
