Individual Farmers’ Careers and Transformation of Farm Structures

For family farms, the transformations of structures of production are related to the career dynamics of operators (non-wage farmers) installation, integration of successors or family collaborators, retirement planning, or even quitting or reorientation during their career. The study presented here is on the analysis of the careers of the operators contributing to the social agricultural mutual insurance system and is based on the constitution of a longitudinal individual database to analyze transitions from one year to another during the period 2003-2013, related to two parameters: the regime of activity (part-time or not) and the type of operation (structure of the working collective) in which an operator is present. The distribution of the types of structures distinguished is rather stable over the period: one-person operations dominate on the two dates. It is clear from the analysis of the careers that the dynamics relate to two sets that stand out, a majority of operations where only one operator is present (with or without family support or employees, 2/3 of the operators), and a minority of complex family farms.
