Cet article traite de l’émergence d’une sociologie marxiste de l’environnement aux États-Unis. Par-delà une grande variété de courants, des sociologues comme John Bellamy Foster, James O’Connor et Ted Benton ont commencé, dans les années 1990, à organiser une approche exégétique de Marx. Leur objectif était de trouver, en deçà du texte, des éléments épars d’une écologie présente dans le corpus de Marx. En fait, cette approche est une construction (et non une reconstruction) d’arguments sociologiques pour une approche marxiste de la sociologie environnementale. En enrôlant Marx dans leur conceptualisation d’un nouveau segment de la sociologie, Foster, O’Connor et Benton reproduisent simplement le geste fondateur de toute discipline, cherchant chez des auteurs totems une inattaquable légitimité.

This article deals with the emergence of a marxist environmental sociology in the United States. Beyond a various sociological trends, sociologists such as John Bellamy Foster, James O’Connor and Ted Benton began, during the 1990s, to organize an exegetic approach of Marx. Their objective was to find, below the text, few scattered elements of ecology in Marx corpus. In fact, this approach is a construction (not a re-construction) of sociological arguments for a marxist approach of the environmental sociology. By enlisting Marx in their conceptualisation of a new segment of sociology, Foster, O’Connor and Benton just reproduce the founding gesture of any discipline, looking at totem-authors for an unassailable legitimacy.
