Autism Spectrum Disorder and empowerment: fans’ reception of the series Atypical (Netflix, 2017-2021)

This article analyzes representations of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) in the TV series Atypical (Netflix, 2017-2021) as well as fans’ reception of these representations within an online community dedicated to the series. Through analysis of the series and of the existing literature in critical autism studies, we identify persistent stereotypes as well as emerging anti-stereotypes. Our analysis of fans' reception of the series shows a high degree of engagement with these representations of autism. We explore as well how fans utilize these representations for information and awareness-raising purposes. For people directly affected by ASDs and their families, online discussion about these representations contributes to forms of empowerment.
