This article describes the reasons why researchers do not share their research data. Based upon a session at a Bar Camp of the Leibniz Association and the results of the eDissPlus project on research data related to doctoral theses, the author summarises and analyses the explanations and arguments given for not depositing and/or not opening research data in a data repository. The reasons are technical or legal, but also include personal attitudes or lack of appropriate resources. Three issues are identified: the disproportion between effort and benefit; an unclear legal situation; and lack of operational infrastructure. Finding solutions requires active mediation and ongoing dialogue between information professionals and scientific communities.
