Developmental approaches in child psychology and psychopathology

Within transactional approaches (Sameroff, 2009), psychological development is viewed as being influenced by continuous transactions between the changing characteristics of the child and those of the experiences made possible by his/her environment. This article considers some of the implications of this framework with regard to (a) the necessary complexity of theoretical models of development, (b) the understanding of psychological disorders usually diagnosed during the childhood period, and (c) approaches to prevention and intervention.
