Radio and Television Public Service Broadcasting in the French Overseas Départements in the Digital Age: Ongoing Anecdotes about “Proximity,” “Local,” and “Outward Looking”: The Case of Réunion 1ère (France Télévisions)

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2013. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Réunionese television was launched in 1965 by the Minister of Information, Alain Peyrefitte. Since then, each technical innovation (a second channel, control room, satellite broadcasting, etc.) has been an opportunity to tell what amount to charming anecdotes on the role this television promises to play on Réunion Island. The installation of digital technology, particularly Digital Terrestrial TV in November 2011, falls within the scope of this modernist representation and technical determinism. Through analysis of a corpus of speeches (official or otherwise) by Reunionese decision makers from the media during its short history, we see how these discursive recurrences invalidate the idea of a “digital revolution.” In fact, the process of change in the Réunionese broadcasting scene is largely part of the social, political, and economic changes of the past 45 years.
