AI and media guidelines: The hidden issue of dependency on technology suppliers

The study is based on a corpus of 38 media outlets’ guidelines in 14 countries, as well as six interviews with journalists involved in drafting these guidelines from five countries. The analysis highlights a technophile tendency present in the content of the guidelines, where AI is often reduced to just another tool, evacuating issues related to discrimination, environmental impact and technological dependency. The comparative analysis of the interviews reveals growing concerns about editorial independence from technology providers and the potential devaluation of the profession as journalistic work becomes increasingly automated.
