Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This article examines unpublished correspondence of Talleyrand recently discovered in the National Archives. Written between 1786-1787, these letters cover a mission undertaken on behalf of Calonne in London by the Duke of Lauzun sent to observe the reactions in English public opinion at the time of the Franco-British commercial agreement. This correspondence also deals with the Diamond Necklace Affair, and Talleyrand’s role with Calonne during the Assembly of Notables. By the sheer variety of subjects contained in this correspondence, it constitutes a fascinating instance of parallel diplomacy at the end of the Old Regime, all the while revealing a new episode in the political apprenticeship of Talleyrand.
