La littérature francophone s’accorde généralement à définir le handicap psychique en le distinguant du handicap mental. En donnant de nouveaux droits à la compensation, le législateur modifie cependant la place du malade dans la société. La bascule du domaine de la santé à celui du handicap semble produire des conséquences, tant dans la représentation des troubles, que dans la conception de leurs traitements. Il paraît dès lors intéressant de repérer et de questionner quelques limites cliniques introduites par la notion de handicap psychique afin d’en éviter les écueils éventuels. L’expérience d’une pratique auprès d’enfants, adolescents et jeunes adultes en Sessad vient illustrer comment il est possible de maintenir une orientation soignante dans un tel dispositif, mais aussi quelles contraintes la notion administrative de handicap génère.

The French-speaking literature generally agrees to define psychic disability ( handicap psychique) by distinguishing it from mental disability ( handicap mental). If the latter is associated mainly with the idea of intellectual disability, the former is rather related to psychopathology. Law 2005-102 in France legally recognizes the existence of this category. By giving new compensatory benefits, the legislator nevertheless modified the patient’s place in society. The shift from the field of health to that of disability seems to have consequences, in the representation of disorders as well as in the design of their treatments. It therefore seems of interest to identify and question some clinical limits introduced by the notion of psychic disability in order to avoid possible pitfalls. In practice, the notion of psychic disability could easily lead to the reduction of psychiatric care to the practice of functional rehabilitation. The clinical symptoms of the disorders have not really changed. Clinicians who take care of these subjects note the limits of practices based on the notion of disability, and maintain reference to the notion of suffering.

La literatura francófona coincide en general en una definición de la discapacidad psíquica distinguiéndola de la discapacidad mental. Al conceder nuevos derechos de compensación, el legislador modifica el lugar del paciente en la sociedad. El desplazamiento desde el ámbito la salud hacia el de la discapacidad parece tener repercusiones, tanto en la forma de representar los trastornos como en el diseño de sus tratamientos. Por lo tanto, parece importante identificar y cuestionar algunas de las limitaciones clínicas introducidas por la noción de discapacidad psíquica, con el fin de evitar los posibles obstáculos. La experiencia de trabajo con niños, niñas, adolescentes y adultos jóvenes en un Sessad (servicio de educación especial y de tratamiento a domicilio) ilustra cómo es posible mantener una orientación de tratamiento en un sistema de este tipo, pero también qué limitaciones genera la noción administrativa de discapacidad.
