RésuméLes trois sources de puissance généralement reconnues - économique, militaire et culturelle - se sont développées dans le contexte d’un libéralisme indissociable des origines américaines. La nature de l’État a aussi joué un grand rôle, en particulier récemment avec l’émergence de l’État « virtuel » post-moderne. Défense et militarisme aux États-Unis doivent donc être compris en analysant comment l’État américain a su articuler ces facteurs sans renier son héritage libéral réticent à la raison d’État.

Liberalism and Militarism in the US from the Origins to the Post-Industrial AgeThe three widely admitted sources of power - economic, military and cultural - have mutually influenced each other in the vibrant context of American liberalism. The nature of the state has also played a significant role, especially recently with the rise of the post-modern “virtual state”. So, the nature of American defense must be also understood by analyzing how today’s American state has mobilized and integrated the three sources of power, all in the context of a historic liberalism that favours the exaltation of trade and business enterprise over military pursuits in the name of raison d’État.
