Difficult childbirth, near-death experience, and mother-child bonding

Despite the acknowledged frequency of difficult childbirth as a condition for near-death experiences (NDE) (20 percent of all NDEs, according to Zingrone and Alvarado, 2009) and the many testimonies available online, there is currently no specific study on this subject. Based on four clinical encounters, we question the potential traumatic impact of this strange experience using Traumaq, both for those who experience it and in establishing the mother-child relationship. For this small sample, data from a semi-structured interview and the Rorschach inkblot projective test indicate an attacked narcissism as well as difficulties in identifying with maternity and femininity. We have also observed aftereffects on the mother-child relationship, such as difficulties in establishing the initial bonds. These preliminary results encourage a clinical reflection on possibilities for the prevention and treatment of this complication of childbirth.
