When getting old is painful

Ageing is a long journey into the irreversible, where the first times of adolescence are replaced by the last moments of passing time. The “never again” never ceases to punctuate the day. It’s impossible to repress the growing precariousness of a life that is heading toward its end. An old body harbors fewer possibilities for transformation and rebirth. Sometimes physical deterioration makes ageing a lengthy ordeal, punctuated by the mourning of loved ones and old friends, making the person a survivor. The confrontation with death intensifies, and some older people slip into a state of self-denial. No doubt for many, death is less the consequence of old age than a dwindling will to live, the diminution of the meaning that sustains existence.
