The Otter Ex Situ

The conception of ecological networks raises the issue of what previously used to be externalised in animal species management. We compare two case studies focused on the otter, an animal very difficult to observe in its natural habitats. Following the species through ecological corridors, the meaning of «outside» becomes arguable. Isolation was formerly a protective device against threats. Free exchanges now allotted to this specific animal species, and others as well, require a different organization of space and of co-operative groups.
