Death in old age: Between dream and anguish
Type de matériel :
100
Using two situations as a starting point, we will look at the social context and theoretical models of death itself in psychic life. Old age and death are situated between two extreme social and psychological positions. The denial or avoidance of death by society, families, and older adults themselves leads to a fantasy of immortality. On the other hand, the crushing weight of old age on or by death means that the older adult is reduced to a would-be dead person. Nothing else can be envisaged, described, or shared for such individuals. This translates to the constant isolation of older adults, unless they begin to mourn what they once were, seemingly lost forever, and what they have become, a grief they will have to learn to live with if they are to tolerate their loss of self and what part of it will live on in those around them.
