The Latin Culture of Eustache Deschamps

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2005. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : G. M. Roccati, The Latin Culture of Eustache Deschamps. Deschamps's work testifies of a Latin side to his culture that has often been neglected because of the volume of his production in French. The present article will review his translations ( Lai de Fragilit? Humaine, Geta), his original works in Latin, whether in prose (a play on the schism) or in verse (a dozen pieces, two of which are of some length), and consider the status of these texts and their versification techniques. It will show that Deschamps had perfect control of the language (though he ignored quantitative prosody) and that there is no particular relationship between content and the use of Latin: Latin is used in texts about the Church or the national past, as well as in his playful pieces. He used Latin as a vehicular language, did not ponder its use, and thus remained outside the humanist trend.
