This article details the preliminary quantitative findings of the first study for the doctoral thesis, “Impacts on well-being and clinical implications of near-death experiences.” In this study, an online questionnaire with sixty-seven questions was used. Fifty-one people who identified as near-death experiencers (NDErs) participated. The questionnaire included a mixture of multiple choice and open-ended questions regarding the NDEr’s life before, during, and after their NDE. The questions addressed changes that were difficult to experience and how these difficulties were expressed. Quantitative analysis measured possible correlations between “negative” and “positive” impacts on well-being (aftereffects) against a handful of variables, including the depth of the NDE and age when the NDE occurred. The initial quantitative findings suggest that, regarding the depth of the NDE, there is a positive correlation between long-term mood changes. Transcendental NDEs also show a positive correlation with mood. A long-term change in how one perceives life’s purpose also had significant positive correlations with a change in mood and social well-being. These three aspects were positively correlated with long-term changes in one’s life satisfaction and happiness. Furthermore, a high degree of significance correlated with age (under twenty) compared to negative social aftereffects of an NDE was found.
