“Think old age, think old women”. As of 2022, life expectancy at birth is 85.2 years for women and 79.3 years for men. In addition, since the 1960s, women have almost invariably outstripped their male counterparts by 6 years. Yet retired women receive an average pension that is 28 percent lower than that of retired men. At 75, widows outnumber widowers 4 to 1, and at 90 and over, this figure is 5 to 1, which is a major cause of social isolation. Women face the combined effects of sexism and ageism. Ageing is therefore not a neutral factor and poses specific problems for women. However, over and above the injustices they encounter, these “old women and citizens » bear the full brunt of the responsibilities of the pivotal generation—those of helping their children, grandchildren, and their own parents.
