L’apparition sur une scène de l’attention publique dépend désormais d’une multitude de médiations techniques et discursives au premier plan desquelles figurent les médias. Ces derniers participent à la définition d’un ordre du visible qui fait apparaître des réalités ou des acteurs tout en condamnant d’autres à l’invisibilité. L’inexistence sociale, qui va souvent de pair avec l’invisibilité médiatique, peut faire naître, sous certaines conditions, des luttes pour la visibilité qui cherchent à transformer les catégories hiérarchisées de l’attention publique et de l’estime sociale.

They help to define an order of the visible that reveals certain realities or actors while condemning others to invisibility. In certain conditions social inexistence, which often goes hand in hand with media invisibility, can generate struggles for visibility intended to change the graded categories of public attention and social esteem.
