Worldwide globalization leads to the transfer of economic activities from countries of the north to countries of the south. This shift amounts to social and environmental dumping, of which ship dismantlement provides a good example. However, the working conditions and the environmental damage lead to social reactions as public opinion, alerted by ecologists and NGOs and eventually the mass media, is becoming increasingly sensitive to the ethical dimension. This leads to the blocking of plans and the strengthening of regulations. Moreover, the protests are stronger for military ships.
