Focusing on Gen X employees in France, the aim of this paper is to identify the factors that drive the BYOD (bring your own device) phenomenon and to outline its managerial implications. It is based on a three-step approach comprising: focus groups with Gen X employees (Step 1), an online survey (Step 2), and an interactive seminar with human resource specialists (Step 3). Our results reveal a number of factors driving BYOD professional usage among French Gen X employees, from which we draw managerial inferences. We can construe organizational change as social change. BYOD enables greater efficiency in managing resources. Managers who understand the benefits of BYOD will also reap the benefits of enhanced employee satisfaction and empowerment. This article reveals nuances of BYOD, applied to a generation stereotyped in France as somewhat reticent concerning ICT usage. Our study shows that Gen X have wholeheartedly adopted BYOD and that there is a need to manage BYOD in this specific context.
