This article testifies to what was no doubt the first example in France of teaching focused on learning how to do field work and observation at the master’s degree level of sociology and below. The article explains the context, the steps involved and the various factors: first, the reactions of the students themselves, who made the author and his associates realise that teaching students to observe was both possible and a form of intellectual training.
