The Kanak “Coordinators” or the Impossible Indigenous Elite in New Caledonia

School is at the core of contemporary Melanesian nationalist demands in New Caledonia. The genesis of the school as an institution has remained in the shadow of an indigenous policy mainly known to have despoiled and confined the Kanaks, according to the needs of the colonisers. This article discusses the French project for training a local elite between 1853 and 1945, using the results of research combining historical archives and people’s own life stories.
