WiiTM and older adults with dementia: What do caregivers think?

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2022. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : ContextThere are more and more dependent older people with cognitive disorders in nursing homes, who have difficulty carrying out daily activities such as washing, dressing, and eating. This creates a significant workload for caregivers. Non-medicinal approaches have a very broad scope of action, impacting the resident as well as their environment. For example, video consoles such as WiiTM have many advantages (low cost, easy to use, multiple games) and positive cognitive, motor, social, and psychological effects.ObjectivesThe objective of this qualitative study was to establish a WiiTM session in a nursing home. First, caregivers observed older people with advanced cognitive disorders to see how their behavior changed through participation. Next, these same caregivers were invited to describe how they felt about the participants’ engagement with the WiiTM session after 3 months of using the console.ResultsFive residents were observed and presented a gradual improvement in their understanding of the instructions (console usage and game rules), and increased motivation and participation. Six caregivers observed these sessions for 3 months and highlighted a positive reaction to their introduction, a positive impact on motivation and general positive effects (cognitive and motor stimulation, psychoaffective effects, and improved social interactions).
