From recognition to consideration. Thinking about the social and political implications of the “from the hood” image

The question of social recognition is key in considering the image of “the hood” and its inhabitants. Through the prevailing discourses and the way in which these areas are portrayed, a process of exclusion and stigmatization of the inhabitants of the so-called priority neighborhoods is put in to place that “prevents them from being fully accepted in society” (Goffman, 1975, 7). This process, which takes place in space (geographical and social) and through space (considered to be a social attribute) has social and political implications. This article thus proposes to think about the subjective experience of the denial of recognition on the part of the inhabitants of these urban spaces (Honneth, 2013, 2015), in a perspective of social justice (Fraser, 2005).
