The brothers Andr? and ?douard Michelin are known for having created the manufacture of Michelin tires and the famous advertising character Bibendum. Their interest in aviation is much less known. Generous donors, they offered large sums to aid the newly born aeronautical industry to take wing. The Michelin Aviation Cup won by Wilbur Wright in France in?1908 is the first illustration of this. But beyond the sports aspect, the two brothers undertook a veritable campaign in favour of aviation by creating the Michelin Prize in?1911. In?1912, in the face of the German threat, they drew up a doctrine on the use of aviation, distributing a million copies of a pamphlet entitled Notre avenir est dans l'air.
