Dealing with identity transition in a context of major career change: The case of the professional reconversion of military personnel

Occupational transition impacts, sometimes brutally, the identity of the individual, thus stimulating protection strategies of avoidance and denial. The case of the professional reconversion of military personnel invites us to study the interest of extending technical support measures during professional transition, generalizing the implementation of an identity mediation component. This provision is intended to facilitate the transformation of a personal identity polarized by a powerful socio-professional link. After a contextual presentation, the theoretical reflection draws on the concepts of identity and crisis, the idea of military specificity, and the strategies of adjustment at the heart of which the notions of myth and role play a part in the process of personalization through meaning and action. We then present the abductive methodology which allowed us, through sixty-two interviews, to measure the place of identity in the retraining process. Taking a resolutely Human Resource Management (HRM) approach, we try to show the interest of synergic work between scientific disciplines to strengthen the management of professional transition from an environment with a strong work culture.
