Ageing in a self-managed farming community: Individual challenges and collective stakes

The paper focuses on the ageing process in a self-managed farming community. This community was founded more than forty years ago and gives us the opportunity to conduct an exploratory study—through observations and interviews—questioning both the evolution of the community through time and the ageing of its members. In the early days of the collective project—in the wake of the May 1968 protests—the founders built a community in the image of their own age-group (18–25 years). Within this community, ageing was,and still is today, an individual challenge rather than a collective issue. The topography of the place, its infrastructures, and the social organization appear today as a challenge for everyone growing old. This challenge is not experienced collectively, instead, each individual goes through it personally and on their own.
