HRM research on co-working spaces has demonstrated their ability to support the development of professional networks conducive to collaboration and innovation, primarily through the development of a sense of community. Today, however, alongside the relatively isolated self-employed workers who use these facilities, a growing number of employees find them a valued place to work. What kind of community ties do employees forge in these spaces, and how do they coexist with the community ties forged within their organizations? To answer this question of identity, we interviewed 17 employees who use co-working spaces. Using the notion of professional identity to characterize this social relationship under reconstruction, this article shows that professional communities are chosen for their complementarities, but also for the ability they offer to distance oneself from the organized work team.
