Ridicule and commercial cinema: The limits of anti-institutional humor in Jean Yanne ’s films

Jean Yanne’s films mark a certain originality heralding a change from the « vague contemporain » which had previously defined French comedies. This originality is due partly to a critical ideological context which has led to a significant overhaul of mainstream commercial cinema themes. Nevertheless the subversive capacity of this cinema must be nuanced, while it is subject to the constraints of commercial films and it has a duty to incorporate the assumed expectations of the general public, consolidating a certain portrayal of politics for the masses.
