82
In the summer of 1914, international tension increased daily, from the assassination of Jaurès to general mobilization and the declaration of war. Contrasting with the general enthusiasm publicly displayed, the people of the Nord department of France tried to anticipate future events using notaries’ services. Analysis of the minutes of forty notaries’ offices in twenty-nine localities across the department has revealed 290 deeds signed between July 29 and August 5,1914. Examination of this corpus sheds light on the strategies deployed by individuals to anticipate future events as far as possible and protect their loved ones…and their businesses.
