Peptic ulcer disease is a known complication in patients in intensive care units or on anticoagulants who are being given non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Screening and treatment for Helicobacter pylori should be offered to patients starting NSAID therapy. Proton pump inhibitors should be given to patients at high risk of developing a bleeding ulcer and dying from this complication.
