French companies in the Soviet Union, 1950–1991: Operating methods and success stories

In the context of the Cold War and the unstable political climate, trade between the USSR and France proved challenging, especially given the ideological differences and the confrontation between the two socioeconomic systems. Nevertheless, between 1950 and 1991, French companies were able to develop contacts with Soviet customers and establish strong commercial ties. This article will examine the processes involved in the emergence and development of the mechanisms and institutions that paved the way for the business activities of French companies in the USSR. Then, it will present examples of successful cooperation between French companies and the Soviet Union in the areas where trade relations between the countries were most fruitful.
