If we define archaeology as a particular sort of enquiry about singular objects (aggregates including buried artefacts) which focuses on the question of proof, and if we agree that it can be extended to more recent periods, then we must rethink the initial objective of systematizing ancient “cultures” that was first assigned to the discipline. Because archaeological entities are not determined in advance, but nonetheless composed of tangible realities, the analytical approach to these entities based on data tables is well suited for measuring, calculating and enumerating in a manner that extends far beyond the culturalist assignation or exemplification to which it remained confined for so many years, opening up new scope for exploration and inquiry.
